You Want Me to Eat What?!

So I was once told that I was such an open minded person, and the person who said this ask me what I wouldn’t be willing to do when it came to natural “things”. What was my line in the sand? Something came to mind immediately! “Eating my placenta!” I said as quickly as the thought came to me. I had only just heard that this was a thing some people did after giving birth, and I was not in the least bit interested!

Well fast forward about 2 ish years later and l learned that my closest friend was pregnant and wanting to do just this very thing! What? Why? How? Were some of my first thoughts and questions. This was when I was introduced to the idea of placenta encapsulation. I learned just how beneficial this practice could be, how you can dehydrate the placenta and grind it into a powder, then place to powder into capsules so that it is virtually tasteless! This allows you to swallow a couple capsules, and you still receive so many of the reported benefits that ingesting the placenta provides!

Next up was learning just how many reported benefits there are to this practice. The placenta is a marvelous organ, it is created just for the sole purpose to support and sustain your pregnancy. In the process of doing its job it is infused with many substances that are great for this sustainably and those same substances are proposed to offer amazing benefits to the mother once baby is born.

Those may be*:

* Preventing and lessening the risk of postpartum depression or ‘baby blues’

* Replenishing your iron from blood loss during birth and to prevent postpartum anemia

* Lending you a consistent flow of oxytocin long after your birth euphoria ends

* Providing the HPL hormone to help establish early and healthy milk supply

* To stabilize your ever changing hormones post birth

* To replenish your B vitamins and energy that were used during the labor and birthing process

* Protection from infection and bleeding due to retained placenta tissue or membranes

* Offer natural pain relief from the labor and birth of the baby

So thus the reason to do this odd practice! But was it really odd? As I learned more and more I learned many cultures have used the placenta for many purposes, such as planting on ancestral land to created a bond to home, consuming a piece of the raw placenta immediately after birth if there is postpartum hemorrhage, or planting with a special plant or tree, such as a fruit tree, that can grow and nurture the child, all done for centuries.

Again, WOW! This was ancient knowledge, not odd but lost to us in the modern world.

My stance started to shift, I had the What and the Why. Next up was going to be my How! Well I helped that friend Encapsulate her placenta of course!! But could I really handle a placenta?! What about the smell and texture and.. ? I told her I was willing to help but couldn’t promise anything, mostly worried about smell. So once her precious baby was born, it was go time. I cautiously and carefully set to work with her instructions. As I started I was nervous but almost immediately curiosity took over! Such an amazing life sustaining organ, literally the baby’s home of the amniotic sac, their life line of umbilical cord, the joining of two humans, all in my hands! It was magical!

So I did it! I got that placenta encapsulated, and my friend was so very thankful. Her recovery went so well from this Birth compared to her others, the benefits of the encapsulation shinning through!

From there I was hooked! How could I not get training and offer this service to mothers who wanted it? So that friend and I took placenta Encapsulation training and the rest is history! I even when on to have my own placenta encapsulated, and I did it, I ate my own placenta!! Line crossed! Haha

I love offering this service with its reported benefits to those birthing people who want it. I hear so many stories of recovery from childbirth that was such a struggle either with first or subsequent babies, than when placenta encapsulation was added to the recovery, it was a night and day difference. For some it is the mood improving aspects, for others energy, and still others increased milk supply! These stories make my heart sing! To play just a small part in an improved postpartum experience for someone is a great honor.
